How "Legal" Is Your Post?
Memes, spicy comments, sharing and hidden advertising: what is and is not allowed on social media — and how one wrong post can land you in legal trouble.
Think about it: you upload a meme mocking a celebrity, you comment fiercely about your favourite team, or you post a video from a viral event. How legal is that? The truth is, your social media feed is not a "no-law" zone — there are rules that can get you into trouble!
1. Memes & copyright
We love memes, but did you know that using an image without permission may infringe copyright? While in most cases creators don't go after individual users, the platforms (see Instagram, Facebook) may take your post down over copyright.
2. Spicy comments & defamation
Want to curse out the referee who ruined your bet? Careful! If your criticism crosses the line and becomes insulting or false, it may qualify as defamation. And yes, people have ended up in court over a single tweet…
3. Sharing is NOT always caring
Found a photo on someone's profile and shared it? If that photo contains personal data shared without consent, you could land in legal trouble — especially with the GDPR lurking around the corner.
4. Influencers and "hidden" advertising
If you have followers and promote products, remember: advertising must be clearly disclosed. "I wasn't paid, I just like this product" is no excuse if you haven't added #ad!
Social media is a huge playground, but it has rules. Don't let one wrong post ruin your reputation or — worse — get you into legal trouble! If you have questions, Lawful.gr is here to keep you… safe and online!
